Top 8 Illinois State Parks for Outdoorsy Folk

Intro: Welcome to Illinois's BEST State Parks

Illinois was my backyard growing up. My family and I would often drove into the state looking to explore beyond my our usual boundaries. That's how the Midwest is - nothing is terribly far away when you've got the will and the car to get there. And so it is that I wanted to share with you my 8 favorite Illinois State Parks, in no order whatsoever. With this, you'll be well on your way to discovering the great outdoors in your backyard as well!

Let's begin.

Starved Rock State Park

The crown jewel of Illinois state parks, Starved Rock is the one most people have heard of. Located along the Illinois River, the park is famous for its sandstone canyons, waterfalls, and breathtaking overlooks. Come after a good rain, when the waterfalls are in full force. If you love wildlife, keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles in the winter months. Just be prepared for some crowds—this is one of Illinois’ most popular parks for a reason.

Matthiessen State Park

Right next door to Starved Rock, Matthiessen is like its wilder, less crowded sibling. You’ll find the same stunning rock formations and waterfalls, but with a bit more of a rugged feel. The trails take you through canyons, over wooden bridges, and past cascading falls that make you forget you’re in Illinois. It’s the perfect spot for a peaceful hike after braving the crowds at Starved Rock. Definitely one of the best Illinois state parks.

Giant City State Park

This one is one of my favorites. If you want to feel like you're walking through a prehistoric jungle, head to Giant City. The park’s massive sandstone bluffs and lush forests make it a geological playground. The Giant City Nature Trail leads you through towering rock formations that look like something out of another world. And if you work up an appetite, stop by the lodge for some of the best fried chicken in the state.

Shawnee National Forest

Okay, I know—it’s not a state park. But come on, you can’t talk about outdoor adventures in Illinois without mentioning Shawnee. Plus I wanted see if you've made it this far. Consider it a bonus. Feel free to give me hell in the comments :)

This massive forest in southern Illinois is home to some of the best outdoorsy activities in the Midwest like hiking, climbing, and camping to say the least. Garden of the Gods is the highlight, with its otherworldly rock formations like Camel Rock and sweeping views that make for an epic sunset spot. If you’re into backpacking, the River to River Trail will take you across the entire forest. There's hardly a better spot to connect with nature.

Mississippi Palisades State Park

Getting back to our list of the best Illinois state parks we have this beauty. Mississippi Palisades gets it's name from the river it sits perched above. You come here for the dramatic views. The limestone bluffs rise high above the water, creating some of the best scenic overlooks in Illinois. If you’re into rock climbing, this is one of the few places in the state where you can do it. And for history buffs, the park is full of Native American cultural sites and ancient trails that give you a glimpse into days long gone, but never forgotten. It's an outdoor enthusiasts dream.

Pere Marquette State Park

This is the go-to spot for fall foliage in Illinois. Located along the Illinois River, Pere Marquette is famous for its rolling hills and scenic drives that explode with color in the autumn months. If you love horseback riding, the park has some of the best equestrian trails in the state. And if you visit in the winter, you might even spot a bald eagle soaring over the river.

Rock Cut State Park

Northern Illinois’ largest state park, Rock Cut has outdoor adventure year-round. The park is home to two lakes, making it great for kayaking, fishing, and even paddleboarding. In the winter, it transforms into a cross-country skiing and snowshoeing wonderland. Whether you’re camping, hiking, or just enjoying the water, Rock Cut has a little something something for everyone.

Adeline Jay Geo Karis Illinois Beach State Park

A gem on the shores of Lake Michigan, and a mouthful of a name, Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park is magic. It’s the only remaining stretch of natural Lake Michigan shoreline in Illinois, and it’s packed with dunes, wetlands, and prairies that’ll make you feel like you’ve stepped into another world. Say it with me: 'biodiversity'. The dunes alone house more than 600 different species of plants. This place is a nature freak's paradise.

Kankakee River State Park

If you can't get away from Chicago, Kankakee River State Park is your best friend. The river offers good paddling opportunities, but can be shallow sometimes. The hiking trails are relatively mild and wind through forests, along limestone canyons, and past historic sites, making it a great place for both nature lovers and history buffs. It’s an easy escape from the city and well worth the trip.

Wrapping Up

Illinois might not have mountains, but it more than makes up for it with stunning canyons and rolling hills, not to mention the mighty forests waiting to be explored. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls at Starved Rock, climbing the bluffs at Giant City, or paddling down the Kankakee River, there’s an adventure for every kind of outdoor lover.
